Description

The square is famous for the church dedicated to S. Giovanni. The church of San Giovanni Battista is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved examples of Apulian Romanesque style in Matera. The most characteristic feature of this church is its typically medieval interior architecture. The church has a Latin cross plan and is composed of three naves divided by four-lobed pillars, on which rest half columns and capitals with very elaborate and varied decorations. From the pillars develop large arches that form cross vaults.
