The coloured houses of Villa Joiosa are one of the most emblematic elements of this fishing village, located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. These houses can be found not only along the seafront promenade but also in the interior of the town and along the course of the river Amadorio, producing a photogenic polychrome effect.
Tradition has it that these houses were used by fishermen to identify their home from the sea, when they returned home after several days or even months. It is also said that the balconies were used as a means of transmitting news since, from a distance, they could tell, depending on the colour of the sheet or cloth hanging from them, whether good or bad news awaited them.
Las casitas de colores de la Villa joiosa constituyen uno de los elementos más emblemáticos de este pueblo de pescadores, asentado a orillas del mar Mediterráneo. Estas casas se encuentran no solo a lo largo del paseo marítimo sino además por el núcleo interior del pueblo y sobre el cauce del río Amadorio produciendo un efecto fotogénico de policromía.
La tradición dice que estas casas servían para que los pescadores, desde el mar, y ya de vuelta a casa después de varios días e incluso meses, supieran identificar su hogar. Cuentan además que los balcones servían de elemento transmisor de noticias ya que, en la distancia, podían saber, en función del color de la sábana o tela que colgaba de ellos si les esperaban buenas o malas noticias.
