Description

Cofrentes Castle is located in the highest part of the town of the same name on the course of the river Cabriel. This defensive fortress was built on one of the chimneys of the Cerro Agras volcano and offers wonderful views of the surrounding area.

This castle has had different uses over the years. At first it was built as an Islamic fortress. Later, it became a fortress due to its inaccessible location and, subsequently, it was used as a Palace-Residence between the 16th and 17th centuries. It is currently an Asset of Cultural Interest.

The castle consisted of 3 distinct parts: the lower enclosure or Albacar, the parade ground and the bastion. In the complex there was also the Keep with 4 levels and where you can see the Clock of the Castle Tower, a mechanical type clock, forged, the oldest in the Valencian Community and one of the few of its kind in the world.

The material remains that have been collected show the occupation of the elevated area since the first settlements in the Neolithic period, as well as the peculiar characteristics of the volcanic terrain, which can be seen in the components of the castle's structures. Black stone blocks from the ashes and lava of the Cerro de Agras volcano. This can be seen from the top of the Torre del Homenaje.
