Description

The Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro, a landscape of arts and sciences, located in the heart of Madrid, is a cultural landscape designed in an urban environment that has evolved over time while maintaining its essence: to introduce nature into the centre of the city for the enjoyment of its inhabitants.

Since the 16th century, the Paseo del Prado, the first tree-lined promenade in a European capital, has been the prototype of the urban boulevard, creating a space for leisure and recreation in an urban environment. This model would spread throughout the Iberian Peninsula and the overseas territories of the Hispanic empire, especially with the different projects for promenades and avenues that arose between the 17th and 19th centuries in the main Latin American cities. A century later, King Philip IV chose this privileged setting to build his new Buen Retiro Palace and gardens, closely linking the palace gardens and the avenue. The Buen Retiro Palace became the epicentre of the Golden Age of Spanish culture, the scene of the most notable artistic and literary expressions and works, housing extraordinary art collections.

At the end of the 18th century, King Charles III carried out an enlightened project of general renovation of the city, with a new vision of the urban space that brought together scientific and cultural buildings: the Royal Botanical Garden, the Royal Astronomical Observatory, the Royal Academy of Language and the Academy of Sciences, now the Prado Museum. A great project dedicated to disseminating science and educating the public, which would also beautify the city. This urban renewal became a model that exerted a special influence in Latin America, resulting in outstanding projects on the other side of the Atlantic.

Since then, this area has continued to bring together in a high-density space the main cultural, political, social, scientific and economic institutions, representing a dynamic society, such as the Bank of Spain, the Congress of Deputies, Atocha station, the Royal Conservatory of Music, the Royal College of Medicine of San Carlos or the headquarters of the Madrid City Council, among many others. During the last century, it has become the so-called Paseo del Arte with the Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofía Museums as its main exponents.

Therefore, as part of a continuous evolutionary process, the property remains faithful to its origins related to leisure while enjoying the arts and sciences. All this makes the Paseo del Prado and the Buen Retiro an example of an urban model, the image of a utopian ideal for a new society that spread beyond our borders. A rich, heterogeneous and dynamic urban landscape carefully designed for the recreation and education of citizens in contact with nature.
