Description

The visible remains that were found correspond mainly to the appearance of an Andalusian neighborhood from the 13th century, with some visible elements belonging to the 12th century and, possibly even from the end of the 11th, which is called "rabaḍ, rrabal or suburb of the Arrixaca" . The greatest interest in the remains found in San Esteban is the possibility of having an overall vision of a large urban space that brings together houses, streets and walkways in Andalusian Murcia. These excavations have allowed us to know customs, infrastructures (such as sewers) and the type of buildings of the Islamized Murcia in the 12th and 13th centuries. Regarding the structure of the suburb, we must highlight four especially relevant spaces: Precinct I, Precinct II, the building called "oratory" and the maqbara or Islamic cemetery as the main areas of action for archaeological research. Thanks to the collaboration between the University of Murcia and the Murcia City Council, an interdisciplinary project of scientific research, training, enhancement and dissemination of the San Esteban archaeological site is being carried out. Despite having concluded the first part of the project, it is still in an initial phase or stage of project development and needs to be completed with future campaigns and, for this reason, the conservation guarantees are postponed with the use of techniques, consolidation products and restoration adapted to the particularities of the archaeological site of San Esteban in a definitive way.
