Description

The Monastery of Poblet is located in the south of Catalonia in the municipality of Vimbodí. It is one of the largest and most complete Cistercian abbeys in the world, built between the 12th and 14th centuries around the church built in the 13th century.

Impressive for the severe majesty of its architecture, it has a fortified royal residence and houses the pantheon of the kings of Aragon. It was founded by Ramon Berenguer IV of Barcelona and, except for short periods of time, its rooms have always been used for their original functions, which has favoured the conservation of the site, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1991.

Its structure is made up of three enclosed enclosures, surrounded by a wall with battlements and a set of square or polygonal towers. The first (outermost) enclosure contains buildings from the 16th century, including warehouses, workshops and dwellings for the labourers, as well as other buildings used in the economic life of the community. The Gothic chapel of San Jordi, dating from 1452, is also preserved in this area. The fortified Golden Gate leads to the second enclosure, made up of the Plaça Major, around which are the remains of the hospital for the poor dating from 1207, the Romanesque chapel of Santa Catalina and the Bossería. The third enclosure or central nucleus is fortified and contains the church, the cloister and the monastic quarters proper.

Poblet was extraordinarily important in the field of art, culture, history, spirituality and the repopulation and agricultural and livestock farming of the Catalunya Nova in the sphere of the Crown of Aragon. Proof of this is its library and scriptorium, well known since the 13th century.

All the circumstances described above, added to the spirituality of the monastery's life, have made the Monastery of Poblet a very important centre in the life of the country from its foundation to the present day.
