Description

The work of Antonio Gaudí is the greatest exponent of modernism in our country. This style, developed in different parts of Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, represented a break with the ways of doing things at the time, influenced by the use of new materials and techniques introduced by industrialisation. The theorists Ruskin and Morris, with their manifesto in favour of a return to traditional ways of working, were the inspirers of this movement which, with the common factor of support for craftsmanship, the integration of all the arts, inspiration in nature and sincerity in the use of materials, produced very different works throughout the continent.

In Gaudí's case, form, function and decoration are inseparable, all three forming part of a single idea. Using materials such as brick, glass, iron and ceramics, he achieved curved, undulating lines, full of plant and animal suggestions, resulting in the desired use. The Barcelona bourgeoisie, with great artistic sensitivity, wanted to express their status through a new architecture and were its main patrons. For this reason, the city of Barcelona was the main setting for their works, making it their hallmark.

In 1984, Parc Güell, Palau Güell and Casa Milà were declared World Heritage Sites, the first modern works representing the artistic avant-garde of the 20th century to achieve this recognition. In 2005 this initial declaration was extended to include the works of the Nativity façade and the crypt of the Temple of the Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló, Casa Vicens and the crypt of the Güell colony in Santa Coloma de Cervelló, one of his first projects characterised by its neo-Mudejar style.

The declaration of these seven elements highlights the exceptional universal value of the work of the brilliant Catalan architect and his unique imaginative contribution to the architecture of the time.
