Description

The Teide National Park stands out for its extraordinary landscape, being one of the most spectacular in the world. It is a geological monument in which the volcanic cones and lava flows form a marvellous array of colours and shapes. It has a great biological richness, due to the high percentage of endemic plant species and the importance in terms of number and exclusivity of its invertebrate fauna.

A total of 168 plant species can be found in the Teide National Park. Of the 50 endemic plant species that live in the Park, some 15 are practically exclusive to it, which is a great responsibility when it comes to combating the danger of extinction that these unique specimens may suffer.

The Teide volcano is the highest point on the island of Tenerife and in Spain. It is the third largest volcano in the world from its base. At 3,718 metres, it is the highest peak of any landmass in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Teide National Park has become an important centre for international research in volcanology, as its morphology and constitution provide evidence of the geological processes that marked the formation of the oceanic volcanic islands.

In 2007 the Teide National Park was declared a World Heritage Site in the category of natural property.
