Description

The Garajonay National Park is located among the central peaks of the island of La Gomera, one of the 7 Canary Islands. It protects an emblematic forest of our country: the laurel forest or Monteverde. An ecosystem that dates back to the Tertiary period, with a flora that survived from the subtropical forests that populated the Mediterranean basin millions of years ago.
Its declaration as a National Park in 1981 and World Heritage Site by UNESCO 5 years later, recognise the value of the Canarian Monteverde as one of the oldest forests in Europe. Frequent fogs brought by the trade winds have allowed its existence, unimaginable without the almost permanent presence of the humidity provided by the clouds. The so-called horizontal rain soaks the laurel-like evergreen leaves, which give the name laurisilva to this unique sponge forest. Garajonay extends between 800 and 1,487 m above sea level, where the highest point on the island is located.
Of volcanic origin, the absence of eruptive activity on La Gomera for the last 2 million years, and a climate that favours erosion, have created a relief furrowed by deep ravines. They are home to a large number of endemic species of flora and fauna, and the spectacular Roques stand out, barely interrupting the dense, green mantle of vegetation.
