Description

The Cueva de Montesinos cave is located in the municipality of Ossa de Montiel, in the province of Albacete. With a depth of 18 metres and a bottom through which water circulates, we can say that it is a karstic cavity caused by the dissolution of the limestone rock which is the predominant one in the Lagunas de Ruidera natural park, with a maximum depth of 45 metres, 59 metres wide and a maximum depth of 18 metres, with a height of 5 metres in the interior. The entrance is located completely horizontal, and the cave is accessed through large blocks of stone that collapse down to the "Portal", also known as "Los Arrieros" (The Muleteers' Portal), as it was their shelter from the inclement weather. The entrance descends through a vestibule surrounded by stone blocks that lead to the middle of the cavity to the largest area, "La Gran Sala" as it is known, in this dome there is an important colony of bats. Declared of Cultural Interest.
